A Dutch Pub

Rembrandt's Dutch Pub was brought to Dallas in April 2007 by a native of the Netherlands.  It is a bar/tavern/pub...but more than that it is a brown cafe.  For those who have never been to Amsterdam a "cafe" is an establishment selling liquor.  The term "brown" comes from the dark, cozy interiors with the wood and walls stained from years, better yet, centuries of cigarette smoke.  These cafes are found in every corner of Amsterdam and emits "gezellig".  This word  ‘Gezellig’ is one of the most difficult words to translate in the Dutch language. There is no literal equivalent or similar word in English. The words ‘cozy’ and ‘delightful’ in English probably have the closest meaning, but gezellig means much more. Another possible way to describe ‘gezelligheid’ would be good atmosphere. So, a fantastic combination of coziness, enjoyment, relaxation, well laid-back at home or chilled-out in a bar, while being in good company, is ‘gezellig’. The most romantic definition of 'gezellig' could be ‘an atmosphere that knows no time’.
